The free random team generator
SpinKit’s team picker splits any list of names into balanced, random teams. Paste your group, choose how many teams you want, and everyone is shuffled and shared out as evenly as possible — then you can tweak the result by hand. It’s built for PE lessons, workshops, game nights and any time you need fair groups fast, and it’s free with no sign-up.
How to make random teams
Enter your names one per line — paste a class register or a guest list straight in — then pick the number of teams you want (1–12) and generate. SpinKit shuffles everyone and distributes them as evenly as it can, so no side is short-handed. If your group doesn’t divide equally, the extra members are spread out one per team rather than dumped on one side.
You can drag people between teams afterwards (or tap a name, then tap a team on phones) to make a manual adjustment, or re-roll the whole thing for a fresh split. Need one person only? Use Pick to draw a single random name from the full list — handy for choosing who goes first or a single captain. Lists are saved locally on your device, so a class or squad you set up once is ready next time without retyping.
Where balanced teams matter
Teachers split a class for PE, group projects and debates; facilitators break a workshop into breakout rooms; and friends sort players for a game night, a quiz or five-a-side. Coaches use it to mix up practice sides so the same cliques don’t always end up together.
Randomising the split takes the politics out of picking sides — nobody is chosen last, no one has to make an awkward call, and the groups come out even. When fairness is visible, people accept the teams and get on with playing.
Tips for fairer groups
Set the team count to match how many sides you need, then generate. If sizes look uneven after a split, re-roll or drag a name or two — a quick manual nudge after a random base split is usually fairer and faster than hand-picking every group from scratch.
For recurring groups, keep the name list on the page (it saves on your device) so you can re-split the same class or squad in seconds each week. Re-roll freely — because the base is random, every split starts from a level playing field.
Pick one name when you need a single call
Splitting the group is often only half the job. Once you’ve got even teams, you may still need one person to present first, pick first, or lead a side. Use Pick on the full roster to draw a single random name — then generate teams as a separate step when you’re ready to split the group.
Because everything runs from the same saved list, a class or squad you enter once becomes a reusable kit: re-split into fresh teams each week and draw a new “who goes first” whenever you need it, without retyping names.
Frequently asked questions
- How does it balance the teams?
- It shuffles everyone and distributes them as evenly as possible across the number of teams you choose, spreading any remainder one per team, then lets you adjust by hand.
- Can I set team size instead of team count?
- Not yet — you choose how many teams you want (1–12), and SpinKit works out even group sizes from your list. If you need a specific size, pick the team count that gets you closest, then drag names to fine-tune.
- Can I pick a single winner or captain too?
- Yes. Use Pick to draw one random name from the full list — useful for who goes first or a single captain. It does not pick one captain per team automatically.
- Can I move people between teams after generating?
- Yes. Drag anyone from one team to another to fine-tune the split, or on phones tap a name then tap a team. You can also re-roll the whole thing for a completely fresh set of teams.
- Are my name lists private?
- Yes. Teams lists are stored on your own device and do not sync to the cloud. They only leave your device if you deliberately copy, export or share them yourself.
